A project that we are proud to have worked on was a school carnival. It turned out a tremendous success with a positive and uplifting end. Children created their costumes and floats and built the sculptures which were needed for the carnival. The crucial aspect of it was getting the children involved and displaying all their hard work. From this we could create a fun day where passers-by in the community could join in and share the experience and enjoy the work which the children had created. This left the children with the sense of having achieved something positive and impactful. They could be proud of what they had created by themselves and see the impact which the community had created.

Dog Kennel Hill Primary School in East Dulwich recently received some exciting visitors in the culmination of their ambitious Art Week. Lord Leslie Griffiths who sits in the House of Lords at Westminster officially opened the school’s exhibition in which all pupils created their own masterpieces inspired by famous pioneers including local artist Anthony Gormley, Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol. The result was a stunning display of over 600 pieces of sculpture, painting and prints which Lord Griffiths described as ‘the most ambitious and impressive art exhibition that I have ever seen in a primary school in my whole life.’
Renowned artist Patrick Jones generously donated one of his iconic works, ‘Pink Fan’. The painting was unveiled in the school’s assembly hall to ‘support, encourage and provide daily inspiration to pupils and teachers in the arts and beyond’, the artist said. Also in attendance were local artists, Simon Burton and sculptor Scolari Douglas Camp CBE who’s public works can be seen around the world including Peckham and Camberwell
DKHS Head Teacher Ms Hillier said, “we wanted to show off the incredible and diverse talents from each and everyone of our pupils at our school and given it’s success we plan to make this an annual event.” PTA Chair Jean Jones who helped organised the event added, ‘we wanted to share this talent across the community and show that this area of South London is a hub for artists and the arts.”

‘Over the years you have championed the arts at Dog Kennel Hill Primary School, supporting all children to take part in art workshops. Through these workshops, children have had the opportunity to contribute to large scale, whole school projects which were then celebrated at our summer and winter fairs. Thank you for your ongoing support, not just to the arts but to Dog Kennel Hill Primary!’ – Barbara Ghezzi, Deputy Headteacher of Dog Kennel Hill Primary
‘Jean Thompson is a force of nature. She’s never been content simply to look at things or to take them for granted. For as long as I’ve known her, several years now, she’s wanted to add value to the community she’s part of. She has direct experience of the world of artistic creativity. I was delighted to unveil a large painting by Patrick Jones (whose work hangs in galleries around the world) at the school which her daughter attends in South London. It was Jean’s effort that made that possible. My time at the school on the day of the opening made my jaw drop in wonder at the commitment of Jean and indeed the entire school to the place of art in human development. I’m delighted at the present initiative which she is undertaking and I know she will inject real energy and enthusiasm into all that it achieves. I’m so happy to be associated with her work in this way. ‘ – Leslie Griffiths (Lord Griffiths of Burry Port)
